CGI-IUGS and DDE Standards TG (DDE-STG) International Workshop on “Status and Future of Geoinformation Standards”, November 7-11, 2023, Kunshan City, Suzhou, China

At this 4-day international expert workshop, the DDE geoscience information metadata standard (Edition 1.0–2023) was formally released with presentations from Prof. Zhang Minghua (DDE-STG) and Dr Steve Richard (CGI-IUGS). The metadata standard integrates widely adopted geoscience metadata specifications after three years collaboration between DDE STG and several other DDE WTGs with the guidance and advice of CGI-IUGS experts.

About 20 invited international experts from Australia, Botswana, Denmark, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Slovenia, the UK, and the USA, together with around 30 Chinese scientists representing several DDE WTGs attended in person, and an additional 10 international experts contributed online. On 7 and 8 Nov, several DDE Working Groups reported progress made so far and plans for 2024-2025.

DDE Platform and other related major geoscience initiatives of other organizations were then introduced. During the last session on 8 November, discussions on the work of DDE and its relationship to other, similar past and on-going initiatives were encouraged and all participants, in particular international experts attending the workshop provided valuable suggestions and advice for strengthening DDE’s future work on data and information standards.

On 9 and 10 November, Future Geoscience Information Standards were the focus of presentations and discussions.  Prof. Harvey Thorleifson, Chair of CGI-IUGS, at the closing session on 10 November 2023, applauded DDE’s work and called upon the international geoscience community to link with DDE WTGs of their interest to promote geoscience information and data standards research and applications.
