DDE presence at the 2023, AGU session, was a significant achievement. AGU, with 22,000 registered participants, is one of the largest gatherings of earth scientists.

The DDE booth, with displays of the DDE-CGMW 1:5 M geological map of the world and many other achievements of DDE projects and initiatives, demonstration of the DDE Platform, and presentations at the DDE booth by eminent DDE scientists and scholars, were significant attractions to many attendees at the AGU.

The presentations at the DDE booth were:

DDE also convened a Town Hall meeting on 12 December, from 1300 to 1400 hours, chaired by Prof. Jennifer McKinley, President of the DDE Governing Council. The Town Hall meeting included two panels:

Panel 1: International cooperation for “Wide.Open.GeoScience” - DDE as an example.

Moderator: Dr. Susan Nash, Director of Innovation, AAPG, Oklahoma, (USA)

Panelists:  Prof. Robert Hazen (Carnegie Science, Washington, D.C.), Prof. Antonio Abreu

(UNESCO, Paris, France), and Prof. Richard Chuchla (University of Texas)

Panel 2: The importance of FAIR principles for future scientific research collaboration.

Moderator: Prof. Hans Thybo, Chair, DDE Scientific Committee (SC) and Chair, International Lithosphere Program (ILP).

Panelists:  Prof. Lesley Wyborn (CODATA and ANU, Australia), Dr. Reyna Jenkyns (WDS-

ITO, University of Victoria, Canada) and Prof. Isabel Montanez (CO2PIP and UC Davis)

Both panel sessions were well attended and each of the two moderators posed questions and invited comments from the panelists on key themes and issues relevant to the future work of DDE, particularly in the context of DDE’s commitment to implement UNESCO Open Science Recommendation and its partnership with CODATA to apply FAIR data principles and guidelines to the DDE Platform databases.

Several members of the DDE Governing Council, Science and Executive Committees attending the AGU sessions regularly visited the DDE booth and learnt of DDE achievements and performance. DDE Secretariat staff took turns visiting other booths and events of interest to network and establish contacts to attract potential new Members and to develop relationships for possible future joint ventures.
